The specific reason can be diagnosed and treated by orthopedic doctors such as the qualified specialists at Providence Orthopaedic.

Common Causes
While the specific and individual causes of shoulder pain can vary, there are several common causes doctors see on a regular basis.

Shoulder Bursitis– bursitis is often diagnosed as the cause of pain in the shoulder. In cases of bursitis, certain combination of symptoms that cause inflammation in the shoulder joint is called impingement syndrome. Impingement syndrome happens when the bursa surrounding the shoulder tendons become inflamed and cause pain. The initial cause of these symptoms is often an injury to the shoulder. The bursa then becomes inflamed, causing thickening which causes further pain. Treatment of shoulder bursitis includes a regimen of anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen, exercises and the use of ice packs to alleviate pain and pressure. Steroid injections and possibly surgery are further treatments if the issue does not improve with exercise and medication.

Cervical Radiculopathy– this issue is caused by inflammation or compression of part of the neck. Pain can be intense from the neck all the way down the patient’s arm, causing muscle spasms and numbness in any part of the arm, depending upon the specific part of the cervical spine that is affected. Treatment for cervical radiculopathy begins with relieving the inflammation with medication and exercises and progresses to surgery if the first line of defense does not help the patient’s situation.
