An Easy Guide to Getting from Kuala Lumpur to the Perhentian Islands on Your Vacation

How to Get There

Of course, one of the most popular travel routes to The Perhentian Islands is from Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur.

There are a number of ways that you can make this journey. Firstly, it is worth noting that all travel between the Perhentian Islands and the mainland is by boat, with a scheduled transfer taking place twice a day from Kuala Besut Jetty. The travel time from Kuala Besut Jetty to the Perhentian Islands is approximately 45 minutes by speed boat.


International Airport (KLIA)

The fastest way is take the flight from International Airport (KLIA) to the closest airport to the Kuala Besut Jetty. ( 45 minutes fly time)


Travel by Air

The fastest option to get to the Perhentian Islands is to take the 30-minute train journey from Kuala Lumpur to the International Airport (KLIA), and catch one of the daily flights to Kota Bharu. This flight takes approximately 45 minutes and is the closest airport to the Kuala Besut Jetty, from where you can take the short boat ride over to the Perhentian Islands.

Travel by Train

It is also possible to make the journey from Kuala Lumpur to the Perhentian Islands by train. From Kuala Lumpur Central Station, you can catch an overnight train to Wakaf Bharu Train Station. From there, you can take the one-hour taxi ride to the Kuala Besut Jetty. This is obviously the longest method of travel, with the overnight train journey taking approximately 12 hours.



You could hire a car and have a 7 driving hour to reach Kuala Terengganu.


Travel by Road

You can also hire a car and make the journey from Kuala Lumpur to the Kuala Besut Jetty by road. Start off by heading east on highway two in the direction of Kuantan. Then, head northeast to Kuala Terengganu on either highway 14 or the coastal road (highway three). This journey will take you through some of Malaysia’s beautiful scenery, with the drive time at approximately seven hours.


Travel by Coach

Another method of making the journey from Kuala Lumpur is by coach. This option has the advantage of giving you the best of both worlds. You can still enjoy all of the beautiful scenery that Malaysia has to offer, without the need to do the driving yourself for hours. Plus, you have the advantage of rest stops and refreshments.

From Kuala Lumpur, you can take one of the comfortable Plusliner buses to Kuala Terengganu. Many of these coach services depart from Kuala Lumpur at the Hentian Putra bus station. Once you have taken the bus to Kuala Terengganu, you can take a taxi to Kuala Besut Jetty. Some buses will even take you into Kuala Besut town itself, with the journey time taking around seven hours.
